Free internet in Sosua?
From another website. Any intel on this?
Dr. José Rafael Vargas is promising, in collaboration with Cable Atlántico, to provide a wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) connection for the residents of Sosúa. The connection is primarily meant for students who can then take their laptops from school, to the streets and parks to work with the free Internet.
The action plan is called 'Sosúa Wi-Fi, free Internet for everybody'. The wireless Internet connection has a range of one kilometre from the source. This should be enough to cover all Sosúa, according to Dr. José Rafael Vargas. It is not yet known exactly when this connection will be operational.

Have not heard of it, but 1 kilometer range wouldn't even tickle Sosua.
Heck, the beach is longer than 1 kilometer.

DeLAncer mentioned it to me last weekend but did not say what coverage. I agree with Marc, 1K is ridiculous. A regular cheap wireless can do that. I'm sure "I hope" he meant 10K's.
Advice to victimes of laptop theft, you might be able to spot your stolen equipment. LOL.

why complain?
Free is free. 1K, 10K, 10M -- who cares. Good on him if he can get it done.

Easy boy.
The OP asks for any intel on the matter.
Eddy corroborates that DeLancer has mentioned it to him, thus there must be some truth to the story.
I explained to the OP, who may not know Sosua well that 1km of coverage will not extend, as in the text that he copied, to schools, parks, in the streets, as Sosua is vast.
If replying to a person in an accurate fashion is complaining in your books, then you have some perception problems.
We work hard to maintain the integrity of this site and of the replies people get.
One could hardly ask for more, than accurate replies.

If they use software that limit's individual bandwidth, heavy internet pages won't even open.
Then, if the intent is to help students, having the service in parks and the streets will be of little use to them, unless they own a laptop, and very very few do, not to mention that laptops are proportionately so much more expensive than desktops, and that the savings from buying a desktop could pay for years of internet service.
Then there's the problem of battery constraints with laptops.
I'm inclined to agree with Lambada, that it may be just an election ploy.

I forgot, he also mentioned that people would be able to access internet, chat, email etc. BUT no large downloads (Music-Movies etc.) Don't know if it's possible to control that???
Politics?? probably.

They can block certain ports and throttle domians that are known for file sharing. Even the most basic of routers allow for port blocking and some of the newer ones allow you to throttle users and various IP's or domains.
If it's going to be anything like the free wireless in Santo Domingo, then it's going to be practically useless. The usual great idea, but lack of planning and infrastructure, knowledge etc kills the project.

My thoughts, exactly.
Sounds good, works bad.
