If you are having trouble deciding where to stay, why not stay at three different places. Make your way from Playa Dorada to Sosua and then to Cabarete. I don't think it will cost you much more. See Puerto Plata hotels to book at Dominican Republic directory of businesses, products and services

Default Rocky's quite modest

Actually, Rocky's has a mix of nice, clean and safe hotel rooms and condos that will surely fit the bill - and the budget.

You can also go to Puerto plata too. I just got back and had a blast my first trip in Sosua. I will definitely be back. I am in my 20's too, but I think down there age does not matter as much. The people love to have fun and there are lots of people and woman to meet. I actually met a girl down there which I never expected to meet. And she showed me a good time and calls me a lot since I have been back.
But wherever you go I think you should do good, because there are a lot of Americans, Canadians and people from Europe down there that know a lot. But just be careful of people that try to be friend you for things. And stay away from people that want to offer you drugs in DR. Being in prison in DR is a very unpleasant experience and they will ask for a lot of money before they release you. But have fun!!!!!

Default playa dorada

I stayed at Playa Dorada last June. Lots of AIs of all different sizes and pool environments. If you are interested in meeting other tourists, why bother with being close to the action?

If you speak a little Spanish you can ride the Carro Publicos from Playa Dorada to Sosua for about 30 to 100 pesos based on time of day (night) and your negotiating skills. They run back and forth all day and night between Cabaretee and Puerto Plata. I never waited more than 5 minutes on the hiway. I had no problems with them with one exception; if you tell them a specific place to drop you off, then they charge about 3 times as much. So, just tell them to drop you at the town you want, and do not mention where in the town you are going. The down side is the driver will speak no English at all, so you have to be able to tell him where you are going, when to stop, and negotiate the price in Spanish.
