Default Are ATVs allowed to drive inside the cities?

Hello everyone once again and this time i'm posting as a resident of the lovely DR. It's been already 2 months that i moved here and living in Costambar.

The main problem i had was the transportation problem which i recently solved by buying a used automatic scooter that serves me well for the time being.

Considering the "quality" of the streets and especially the one that leads to Costambar, it's just a matter of time until i will need to upgrade.

I don't want to buy a car as i'm a great fan of ATVs and that's what i decided to buy in the very near future, as i find it the ideal transportation for this country.

But some dominican friends of mine told me that they are not allowed to drive in the city as they don't belong in any "legal" transportation category since they are nor motorcycles neither cars and therefore they are only considered recreational vehicles aimed to be used for touristic purposes only.

Can you please advise on that, if you know anything? Is it true that if driven in the center of the city(Puerto Plata for example) there's the danger of the police stopping me and give me a whatever hard time or anything else they are supposed to? Is there anyway that this "legal" gap can be bypassed somehow? And i don't mean illegally. Because it just don't make any sense to me.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I never had a problem in Puerto Plata or the other north coast towns. I have a license plate, insurance and my paper work classified it as a "motocicleta", so I don't really see a problem.

Also, an ATV is an excellent choice in comparison to any other motor bike, they're strong and can handle ANY terrain. Good luck.

just like anywhere, if it has a license plate and you have insurance, it ought to be alright. otherwise, it is prolly not alright.

License plate?

I am still waiting for my license plate since last august for my 150 SL...scooter.

Insurance and receipt are more important than the plate...never been stopped for no plate...the helmet is a different issue!

The ATV's are all over and there is a neat version of a dune buggy which peaked my interest as well.

I would rather play with these toys than own a SUV.

For long distance travel I hire a driver.
