Default Snorkeling in Las Galeras

Hi all,

My husband and I will be in Las Galeras in April, and hope to do some snorkeling while we're there. Neither of us have a whole lot of experience per se, and were wondering if you could answer any of our questions:

1. We do have a couple of snorkel sets in travel bags, would it be worth while bringing them with us as opposed to renting?

2. Can most of the snorkeling be done right from the beach, or would we have to pay someone to take us by boat?

3. Where is the best place to snorkel in Las Galeras?

4. Sorry if this is a silly question, but is dangerous at all to snorkel in the area (sharks, rip-tide, etc.)?

Thanks for your time!

There is good snorkling there. You can go from the beach as well. I like La Playita, it is to the left, a short walk from town, the reef is out a little ways from the beach, where the waves break, not far. If you are up to it hike into Playa Madama it looks like it would be good as well, i havn't gone there personally but plan to do it soon. Rincon is pretty good also. Overall i would say bring your gear, and enjoy. If you find any good spots let us know! I am sure there are more areas along Las Galeras beach also.

La Playita is great. Playa Fronton is better, It is a bit farther than Playa Madama. The best way to get there is by boat. We have boats in Las Galeras if you would like to arrange a trip and it can include equipment if you decide to not bring your own.

Yes bring your own snorkel gear - at least the mask and snorkel id not the fins.

It sounds like you have not done much snorkeling so what you see should satisfy. (La Playita as suggested, also the fish cage at Casa Marina, Playa Fronton (be careful for the rip tide), certain parts of Playa Madame (again be careful of the tide.)

I think Fronton is the most interesting in the area - for fish, not so much coral reef but it is a bit dodgy - check the tides.
