Just how bad are the roads to Las Galeras? Can you make it up there without 4WD?

The roads are bad to Las Galeras. However, I have always rented the smallest car possible, and have always made it there. The potholes are very bad, even if you rent a four wheel drive. You must come to nearly a complete stop at many locations, or you will knock the wheels off your car, unless you are in a large bus with huge tires and wheels. If you plan to go anywhere off the main road, that is, to Playa Rincon, Boca Diablo, Playa Fronton, , then you should get the four wheel drive, since you will need to clearance on those dirt roads. Enjoy, aside from the roads, it is a nice quiet place.

Just got back from las galeras on May 26, 09. As long as you dont go off the main road #5, or the one that dead ends into the beach, the main thing to be concerned about is clearance on the vehicle. If you havent driven it befor i would recomend taxi. Gets really bad past Samana

If you have a rental car I would say go ahead and drive to LG. If you are using your own car I would not drive it unless it were an SUV. You will not need 4 wheel drive but you will need the clearance of a vehicle other than a car. A car will bottom out no less than 5 times, in my estimate, on the road to LG.

Hi,
if you aren´t on a roundtrip through the Dominican Republic, but only want to explore the Samana peninsula - rent a quad. In March/April we were in Las Galeras and had a quad for several days - it was absolutely fantastic!!! And on the road Samana - Las Galeras we´ve "made the race".

Saludos (and sorry for my bad English)
