Plantains, Emma - like green bananas, but bigger. If there is a West Indian community near you they will be on sale in the grocery shops, and sometimes in the exotic fruit and veg section of your local Tesco/Sainsbury's etc.

Tesco buys bananas and plantains from friends and customers of us here in the DR .. Not many platanos, but a few.

So, if you buy at Tesco, chances are they will be right from here

Emma, please let me know how your "mangu" experiment turns out.

Just so you know, the "cloves of garlic" touch is not typical....also, make sure you boil them for a while...until they almost fall apart when you try to pick them up..

good luck..

I "got" that it wasn't typical mondongo from your last posts...no worries, I'm still going to try it if my (BIG!!!) Tesco stocks plantains!! :-)

And thanatos, from the poll would say (as it stands) the majority of DR1 are non Dominican? My thoughts being: Not much surprised ;-)

Emma :-)

I had my secretary take a telephone poll of registered DR1 members, and randomly contacted over 100 members, a fairly representative universe. Extrapolating the results, with a margin of error +/- 3%, 75%, Dominicans of any persuasion are unwilling to participate in NALs polls, versus 25% for Non-Dominicans.

Wink

NALS

I voted Non-Dominican

To be fair, I would have felt more represented in this poll if you had had a category: Irish American Aplatanando
