Am I missing something here but after 4 billion dollars in American money pumped into Colombia for "the war on drugs" Colombia is still the leader in cocaine production.

Since when is it the US's responsibility to prevent drug traffic in the RD anyway? An improvement in customs locally could go a long way in stemming the distribution.

If Leonel started focusing on the drug problem and divert the resources currently used for useless projects towards enforcement and education, the drug situation in the DR would improve.

I seem to recall, about a year ago the US had a trainng mission where they put a radar station on top ou the mountain. They also built clinics etc. All I heard was how dare them puting radar in to track planes. They left. Now the US is at fault. Strange

Usually, the people who complain the moment the US becomes active in the region are not the same people who complain the moment the US cease to be active in the region.

For the most part this holds true.

Which is why I say: legalize drugs and give them out for free in massive quantities for those who will personally consume them in the privacy of their homes. Open large clinics for addicts who want to change their lives.

Let the druggies die. Cull the herd.

Society would be better off.

F@(k the "war on drugs". Consumes far too many resources.

I think it would be better to legalize illicit drugs and treat drug addiction as a disease.

Several things might happen:

1. The price of illicit drug will fall tremendously, thus eliminate a good number of the producers and distributors.
2. No more gang wars in attempt to control underground distribution channels.
3. Plenty of savings to tax payers, since running a clinic or rehab center for drug addicts probably don't cost as much as this "war on drugs" which like the Iraq War is NOT WORKING!

If you read between the lines of what Leonel said... he meant...damn the US for spending money on the war and terrorists when they should be giving more to the DR for the DR politicians to pocket.
