It's USA's fault
Posted on DR1 News on March 19, 2007:
Fernandez blames US for drug increase
President Leonel Fernandez says that the United States has shifted its attention from the war on drugs to homeland security and the issues in Iraq. In his opening remarks at the first summit on Drugs, Security and Cooperation held in Santo Domingo last week, President Fernandez said that as a result of 9-11 and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the presence of US efforts in the Caribbean has diminished by 62%. The President cited a study by University of Miami professor Bruce Bagley that showed a decrease in the use of fast boats, helicopters and search aircraft used to look for illegal drug smuggling. Because of this decrease, according to the President, the Caribbean nations are seeing an increase in drug trafficking in the region.
The first Summit on Drugs, Security and Cooperation came to a close on Friday with a decision by the participants to diversify their avenues of cooperation in order to combat drug trafficking. Leaders from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Colombia, and Trinidad and Tobago promised to allocate more resources towards the problem of demand for the drugs, and they issued a call to the international community for more technical and financial assistance. Finally, the declaration calls for further meetings of the group, but the time and place were not announced.
According to Diario Libre, reports from the United States say that the Venezuela- Haiti-Dominican Republic-United States route has become the most successful drug trafficking channel. Drugs shipped through the island of Hispaniola have quadrupled over the last three years, according to an article in the Miami Herald.
Do you agree or disagree with such statement?

Gosh! All this time I thought that drug smuggling was the fault of the drug smugglers.
Drugs coming from Venezuela? I'm sure Chavez is doing a great job on his end...
It's a no-win situation. If the US cracks down severely, their being mean and cruel. If they don't, it's their fault drug smuggling exists. Gives me a freakin' headache...

Gosh!!! All this time I thought there was a symbiotic relationship between smuggler and consumer, albeit a parasitic one.

It's always some other persons fault, very Dominican response.
What about the military and Government people actively involved in drug smuggling or money laundering? Under Hipolito they even converted presidential planes to carry more kilos.
Desde que se inventaron las escusas, nadie ha quedado mal

Getting better at it every day...............unfortunately. Number of cocaine flights into DR in 2003 - 8, number in 2006 - 75. Source: US classified report referred to in Miami Herald article. See chart here:
Drug smugglers blaze new trail - 03/16/2007 - MiamiHerald.com
That if my math serves me correctly is a bit more than quadrupled. Problem isn't so much US policy in Iraq as US policy vis-a-vis Colombia. This has been successful so now Colombian smugglers pre-position shipments in Venezuela - it is still Colombian drugs, however. See what the article says about success rate? 98% So although bulk of Colombian stuff still goes through Central America see chart for how air transported part of this is changing.

plain stupid ..
Got to be one of the most pathetic statements from a president. Forget about statistics, it has nothing to do with homeland security and war in Iraq, drug trafficking is big business it's as simple as that. Just check out certain locations in this country and see how markets are created. And nothing will change tomorrow or next week or next year.

Why should we expect anything less: a complete abrogation of responsibility. Even caught with their hand in the cookie jar, a Dominican would invent some excuse to absolve them of all blame. It's their way of justifying any means for survival.
