perhaps we need to balance this poll with the question - have you been a victim of crime in your home country ? although obviously you would have lived there longer , so you would need a time period for it

Good point, Lindsey. Perhaps we should do a poll to get a count of the people that don't vote in DR1 polls

Only time I was a victim in my country of origin (DR is my home country now ) was when I went back on a visit from here & had my handbag snatched in Tesco's (in 2000 I think it was).

Just to reiterate the time period point - I haven't been a victim of any crime in the DR in the past 13 years. The incidents which did happen (posted above) happened more than 13 years ago.

Once they tried to do the ATM scam (not give the money but subtracting it from your debit account) at the Cabarete Banco de Pupola, I informed my bank and they reversed the transaction immediately..

This was about 3 years ago

A gringo friend and I were stopped in traffic off of the Malecon in Santo Domingo. A quick handed thief pulled along side on a moto and swipped my friend's gold wrist bracelet, who had been resting his hand on the steering wheel.

Keep your windows closed while in traffic.

Default close but not a victim (yet)

A few years ago, on my third or fourth trip I was approached by an undercover Dominican official at SDQ heading for my return flight. I was running late. I had gone through the carry on security check and they did a hand check of my bags as well. This guy in a really cheap suit with a silly looking little badge came up to me as I approached the immigration line and asked to check my bag again during which time he inquired as to how much Dominican money I had on me, etc. I didn't speak much Spanish at all back then so I was only able to understand a quarter of what he was saying and respond to about a tenth.

At this point I stalled him until I could catch the eye of another official and eventually the supervisor came over. The supervisor reached into my bag, inspected and recognized my U.S. Government employee ID, sent word to hold my flight and had the others repack my bags neatly. "El Jefe" then turned to me and (in perfect English, the only English I'd heard throughout the encounter) said: "Sorry to have troubled you, Sir. Have a pleasant flight".

I often wonder what would have become of me if not for that little piece of plastic. I escaped with all of 1,200 pesos.
