Default Crime in Dominican Tourist Zones

Poll prepared by minerva_feliz.

Please do not answer affirmatively to this question for crimes against others that you have heard about second-hand but for which you were not actually present.

Have you been a victim of crime* in a tourist zone** of the Dominican Republic?

A) Yes
B) No
C) No, but someone I traveled with was a victim.
D) Not sure.
E) N/A (I've never been to the Dominican Republic).

*Crime can include: identity theft, motor-vehicle theft, robbery, burglary, larceny/theft, aggravated assault, battery, sexual assault, rape, stalking, aggressive harassment, threats/intimidation or any other illegal offense committed against your person or property.

**Tourist zone refers to areas frequented primarily by foreigners for vacation/holiday, and can include resorts, hotels, beaches, cultural or ecological attractions, historical places, etc.

If you would like to share some details about the crime, please do so, but try to keep it brief and provide factual, useful information (excluding personal identity or info).

The information from this survey will be shared with the Tourism Police (POLITUR) to hopefully aid them in achieving a more accurate understanding of crime in tourist areas and hopefully improve overall safety and security.

1. Yes. Credit card theft. One time via a credit card machine device. I caught on to the scam in time before I lost my card. Three other times, my bank canceled my card due to fraudulent activity on it, which took place in the DR.

Yes, a few times:

1) a friend and I were both robbed in a public taxi at the same time by an incredibly resourceful pick-pocket

2) I was victim of an attempted robbery when I was on the back of our motorbike, but managed to hang on to what he was after

3) I had my telephone stolen at work by a caller allegedly looking for work...

Friends have experienced worse, but I wasn't present.

I still prefer to live here than anywhere else!

Yes.

My credit card was cloned about a year ago during the problems with VisaNet.

I was the victim of an attempted mugging once and had my apartment robbed once.

Once robbed at knifepoint during the Carnaval activities. (I wasn't in the area for the activities, but taking a tourist friend back to her hotel.)

All the other times I was robbed, mainly pickpocketed, I wasn't in a tourist area.

I was on the Conde at the end where they sell books. I heard a lot of commotion. I looked over and saw 2 people arguing. It escalated. On of the men pulled a revolver out. I left......I didn't want to be an innocent victim,
