I mean, it's kind of hard to navigate to the real estate section without noticing it's there.

I would think that one of your biggest criteria would need to be access to private school. (I am assuming you will still be here when your child is 4)
You're not thinking of enrolling them in public school are you?

Hi Doc,
As Janin said the private Cuban clinic in Las Terrenas is excellent, and there is always Dr Polanco, he knows his stuff.
So its a yes for LT Samana.
Happy Days

You must be completely confused by now Doc Doxey - as others have recommended you are just going to just have to come and look around and even then it's confusing to say the least.... only real way is to rent a place for a while, do a good search and see what you feel happy with. I don't believe it can be done within 2/ 3 week visits for most people especially when you have little ones to consider. Good luck in your search of your 'little piece of paradise'.

You'd need to rule out locations yourself onsite first
I don't want to say anything that could be misunderstood here, but i have a funny feeling you don't really know where you are moving to, not just which part you want to.
I understand that your requisites actually exclude some locations for their inherent lack of services, comfort and questionable safety.
Still, to give you a directions instead of just opinions, I think we'd need to know more, like are you intending to work(?) as you seem young enough to, since you have small children. Or, do you and your wife have a good command of the local language?
With what you are telling us so far, the only honest suggestion I could make, is for you two (you and your wife) to come over here for 4 to 6 weeks and travel the country. This may seem a very small country when compared to countries like the US or Canada... but it's still very, very diversified! You'd at least need to develop a feel for areas you definitely would rule out. Don't go into the nice resort hotels, no, rent a car or even better travel the island by bus, like most here do and get to know the real DR before you make the big move... because here, unless you can afford to hide out in Casa de Campo (La Romana) or Cap Cana, the DR will find you eventually, with all it's beauty and problems. You better be sure you'll love it.
I say that, because you seem to look for things like quietness (tranquility?), and in the same post, you'd appreciate to live among Dominicans... well, this is not a quiet country at all, Dominicans are not quiet (one of the reasons I love it here) and many of the ex-pats who stay here are or don't stay very quiet either. Maybe you need to develop a still better feel with this country. Moving here is a big decision, especially if you do it with kids.
Kids is an other subject. Kids will LOVE it here. Looking at Dominican childhood, I would wish for most kids to have the opportunity to at least experience the life joy and family cosiness of growing up in this country among their Dominican peers... BUT, what formal education are you looking forward for YOUR children to have? What LIFE do you hope for them to have when they go into adulthood. If they grow up here, they will (have to) become Dominicanized, which is not bad per se, but also exposes them to the problems Dominicans face in professional life. THIS may turn out to become THE major out ruling factor of all!
... J-D.

Thanks to all of you for your input - I really appreciate it.
J.D. I understand what you are saying completely. It is a big decision, and believe me we are not going to take the plunge without proper research and consideration for our kids.
The reason I started this thread was to try and narrow down where to look for real estate because really alot of the fun of this is nurturing the dream of where we could live. Of course, I may be getting ahead of myself if it turns out I simply hate the place when I visit, but I don't think I will. I visit first, then the family later if I like the DR, that's the plan.
Let's see what a breath of the dominican atmosphere does. Thanks again.
P.S. Vince, sorry for being sarcastic. I'm an expert with computers and the Internet. In that context I misunderstood your intention.

Doc,
I'm curious why you've chose to move to the DR? You've never been here? I'm not trying to advise you against it or anything...I'm just nosy
