Default The perfect spot

Hi,

My wife and I are considering moving to the DR in a years time or so. We have a daughter aged 2 and a new arrival on the way. We have cursory knowledge of the different areas throughout the country, but find it a little difficult to decide where the best place to live would be considering our personal wants and needs.

Perhaps someone can lead us in the right direction in our search for that perfect spot? Here's what should be taken into consideration:

- Safety first. We need easy access to a doctors office at a private clinic. A modern, well-equipped facility.

- We really enjoy going to the beach and generally enjoy natures bounty. We specifically do not want to live in a big city setting.

- Initially we are looking to rent a house, one big enough to comfortably accomodate all four of us. The neighbourhood should be nice and safe.

- There should be other children in the neighbourhood for our kids to meet and play with.

- We need a fast Internet connection, preferably ADSL.

Where should be start looking? Can anyone recommend a reliable real estate agent in that particular area?

We really appreciate all the help we can get. Thanks very much.

Ahh, I see. So you're saying that any area in DR will do? They all have what we're looking for? That's amazing. You have been really helpful, thank you so much. *Snif* ... I'm getting all misty here. Your kindness is overwhelming.

Punta Cana Village on the east coast, some areas of the north coast like Sosua, Puerto Plata and Cabarete, possibly some parts of the Samaná peninsula fit your criteria - but do you want to live among expats?

Hi Chi,

Not necessarily. Expats or native dominicans - both fit the bill. I guess in addition to the points I made initially what we are looking for is peace and quiet, but without being isolated. Also, we would definitely want to take regular trips to the mountains. Food is important, too, as we would most likely make good use of local restaurants. From what I've read the cousine is generally delicious in DR, but Samana was mentioned as particularly nice.

Samaná is lovely, but it fails on the good private clinic count. People I know there have to travel to Nagua or San Francisco for decent doctors.

Hmmm, then Samana won't do. If you had to choose and take the things I have mentioned into account, what would you go for? And why? Just as an aside, our upper limit in terms of rent is around $1,500.

Well recently a Cuban staffed private clinic opened up in Las Terrenas, Samaná.
I suggest renting in a small gated community and then you explore from there.
BTW, 1,500 $ won't get you much of a dream villa...

All your requirements combined don't seem to fit many places in the DR.

1500 USD can get you a nice house for rent. Not a dream Villa, but a nice house in a nice neighborhood. It sounds like you should be looking around Puerto Plata (Sosua or Cabarete) to fullfill all your requirements. There are plenty of neighborhoods around there where you live a relatively quiet life without being very far from restaurants, good health care, beaches, etc. Also the mountains are not very far...
