Raw land in and around Jarabacoa starts around $10 per square metre and the closer to town you get the higher the price $40 US is about average for reasonable accessable land. Check out the two sites from Constanza for what is offered there. Personally I would do a search Se Vende and whaterever area you are interested in.

It has been quite enlightening and is useful info for both the OP and other DR1ers.
A special thanks to the others who corroborated the info and made a believer out of me.
I do recognize that we are not talking about a fancy house and it would surely cost me double, for wanting some features that would make it homier for me, but it's still a heck of a deal, even at double the price.

sorry it has taken me a while to respond to this thread! I try to help as humanly possible being that I am not a true Dominican [I am ecuadorian but married to my wonderful wife from the campos of San Cristobal]. I have learned all I need to know from her family in these humble campos. If I learn of anything else regarding home building I will be sure to post or reply again. I know it is not the nicest or fanciest of house constructions that I am talking about, but a house is a house. Right now a family member is building a home [3 years and counting] but I have been keeping a close eye on budgeting and helping out however possible [even MANUAL LABOR] it is amazing what can be made on a budget. In any case, best of luck and i will post again! PROMISE! - Jaime

hey all! lots of people have posted nice things in here! I am always learning from everyone's input here on these threads and posts so thanks to everyone!
As for the security issue in the campos, I am torn on this opinion because on one end I am familiar and somewhat well known in these campos [Najayo] and maybe its divine intervention that danger has not followed me around....I think it is safe for the most part. Of course one hears horror stories at night with thieves and all, but in my 5 years that I have been traveling back and forth to this beautiful island I have not seen ONE robbery or witnessed a burglary....weird right? who knows....I agree, get to know your neighbors and make friends and you wont be bothered with....given I am very free spirited and friendly and might even be looked at as a gringo? definately a foreigner since my spanish accent and vocabulary is very different from the Dominican vocabulary, yet I am learning new things all the time.
Keep posting as I will do the same! - Jaime

FYI, I will be travelling back to DR in a few months god willing....looking forward to going back to the campos and chill with my wife's family [cousins, uncles and aunts] sitting in the front of the house or on the road and sipping on some beer or brugal....day or night...night is nice, no lights, just the stars and the moon and peace and quiet....good times!

to put in my 2 cents...
I have a little house in Bahoruco, a campo about 16 kms west of Barahona by the beautiful Larimar coast, I was quoted $35,000 dominican pesos to add a bedroom and a little kitchen, the roof will be thatched in palms same as the rest of the house to keep the "campo" look. My boyfriend will be traveling to Barahona tomorrow to oversee the construction and make sure that they do the job well, but I think $35,000 is a cheap price to pay to add a bedroom (solid brick) and a kitchen.

I'll say it's cheap.
In my heyday of partying youth, I've spent that much in an evening just having fun.
I'm truly impressed at how inexpensive it still is to build a modest country home.

Hey why not!!!
Unfortunately since it is right within the 60 meters from the beach any construction needs a permit from Medio Ambiente and I was strictly forbidden to add an inch to what was already approved
They are very strict with us poor mortals, but those resort giants can do whatever the hell they want
Once I have it finished I will be renting it out for ecotourists who want to experience a taste of the real campo life since I only use it once a month and the rest of the time is locked up.

i just looked on my DR map and see where you are located! wow! I have NEVER been to Barahona and it is on my list of places to visit! the farthest southwest I have gone is Bani and las Playas Salinas....I want to go to Barahona for sure this year!
I would be interested in renting out a place to stay on my visit, even if it is only for a day! well worth the trip and experience! - J
