Varilla, concrete, tiles, etc., are not a problem when you can utilize a labor force that is costing you 15% of what it would cost you here, in the states. Yes, I should come down and build 10 to 15 thousand dollar homes and might be able to out up a 50 thousand dollar one for myself with the excess waste material and labor. And not being a smart behind trying to be funny, also............

Let me ask you guys a question regarding the campo? Do you think it is possible to live off the land? grow your own food and be totally independent from the government? without electricity, gas, or anything? Give me honest, valid feedback. I am looking to move into the campo and live rural.

So you've changed your mind.
I remember that Santiago was your destination... even including a telephone(!) line.
Yes, you can live independent from the government, as they won't care about you anyway.
How large is the finca you want to live off?
Do you own it?
Fertile land, right?
You two working the land (a mechanical engineer and a bachelors in business administration), right?
May the Caribbean gods give you insight.

There are people doing just that, however, you are the first person that actually wants to live like that. Most people that live the lifestyle you are asking about were born into it, they did not chose it.
The lifestyle of the stone age is something that a person needs to be born into, otherwise, I think, it will be extremely difficult for anyone else to get used to it.
How about adding a few modern amenities and develop a modern working farm? That's much more feasible and potentially profitable too.

I also have this kind of idea... Buying a small part of land far from real estate sharks, use photovoltaic panels and batteries, get the water from the ground. Even without breeding your own meat and vegetables, this could be an idea of paradise. I've already built myself a 60 square meter wooden house here in French West Indies for less than 15K USD, excluding photovoltaic energy. I feel like doing it again, maybe 100 sq. meters, not far from Cabrera / Rio San Juan. Such a project should take time and sweat, but it's worth it in my opinion ...
