Is this customary?
I found a house in Santiago through a tip of a DR1er
I sent a friend to look at the house and take pictures
He has been doing this for weeks
I did like the house, I told the owner that I would like to rent it
I sent the money to my friend and he had an appt to meet with the lawyer
Before the appt, he had ANOTHER appt for another house which I ended up liking better
I do not want to rent the first house and have not surrendered the money
I am being told that I HAVE to pay that 9,000RD to the lawyer for making a contract
I am willing to do this if this is Customary and normal
If not............oh, well
Someone Let Me Know!!!

The lawyer did his job by doing work for you. You owe him the money.

Thanks then, I will pay him.
We never got to the appointment so I hope that he is honest and actually made a contract as he said he did...
I will ask for a copy of the contract, even though I am not signing it and it will not be binding.
I need something in my hand if I am going to pay 9,000pesos to someone I have never talked to or met.

I wouldnt pay becuase you never went into contract. You simply made a apointment and decided before the deal was made that it was a NO-GO.
Now if you would have went ahead and signed a contract to hire that attorney to represent you then thats a diiferent story.
Do you think that these Attorneys type up a new lease agreement from scratch for every lease agreement? OH PLEASE!
They have a common form that all they do is change the name of the partcipants and hit print!
Don't Pay!

I never signed anything...never even spoke to or saw this person (the lawyer).
It is the owner of the house that says that we still have to pay the lawyer.
My friend still has the money because I changed my mind before the appt.
The only reason I am even considering paying this guy is to keep peace with the owner of the house, she is a very nice person and a relative of a DR1er
I don't want the DR1er to feel bad that he was trying to help me, which may make him reluctant to assist anyone else in the future.
Me entienden?

If you are going to pay someone RD9000 for doing nada, you are not going to last very long in this country. Buy the lawyer a nice bottle of Barcelo Imperial and move on.
Perhaps post your question in the legal section and get a qualified legal opinion of what to do?

I don't know if you are talking about the house my buddy Javier told you about, but I talked for Javier and he said you DO NOT owe anybody anything. He said it is NOT customary for the prospective renter or homebuyer to pay anything before signing the contract.
He also had a few choice word for these people, indeseables, sin verguenzas, ladrones, abusadores, etc.....
