Dominican Republic
Hi everyone!
I'm Peter from Bulgaria, Europe. First excuse me for my english - isn't perfect. In september I think to visit DR and i have some questions. I wanna live in Dominican Republic and firstable i will go to see some small house not in big city's but not so far. I wrote in internet and also speak with dominican people that the prices in sites for property's are not real. Are there nice houses from 30-40k USA $? I want to have a house out of the town. Is Boca Chica good place to live and have a small business like a beach bar, souvenir shop or alcohol and cigarette shop? Is it hard for foreigner to get licence to open this things.
And for my first visit - can i get a good apartment in capital Santo Domingo from 300-400 $ for month?
Thank you!

The answer to all of your questions is NO.
$40,000 will not go far for a house.
Boca Chica is not for innocent people, even those who have lived in Eastern Europe. It is not a good place to live unless you are sort of a criminal element and like to live on the wild side (THis is my personal opinion and not shared by everyone on this board.)
And, you can probably find some place for $300-$400 a month in Santo Domingo..again, not the nicest of places...at least two people I know pay 10 times that much for their apartments.

Bottom line is, come VISIT first extensively with an open mind, open enough even to call the project off. Don't commit any serious money before you have lived renting in a place you have chosen after visiting several location for at least 6 months. Buying is easy, selling, especially in these times, is not.

Thereīre apartments in Boca Chica for that price in the old Panamerican village or whatever itīs called. An American friend of mine is renting there itīs about 10 minutes from the beach.
PM me and Iīll give you his contact details so he can put you in contact with the owner.

One of my friends tell me that the situation in DR now is not very good. He didn't give me more information. Its easy to get a job there or open a small shop in this moment?

Do you know anyone here? And if you do, well enough to trust them to help you. If you are coming here stone cold it will be very difficult. Do you speak any Spanish? This forum has a lot of people that will help you. Just out of curiosity, what or who got you thinking about the D.R.? If you do come here, make sure you bring enough finances with you to cover whatever time you plan on spending here. Don't expect to jump into a business right away and make a good living. This will be a difficult move and quite a learning experience for you.

A good friend of mine (originally from Eastern Europe) after two years of living in DR decided to return back to Eastern Europe because Dominican Republic is way too expensive. Later he bought a house and an appartment in BULGARIA (Slunchev Briag area, near Burgas) and is very happy since then.
Very strange things people think and do sometimes...
