As a gringo married to a dominican and living in Santiago I would say learn from the Sankie boards the telltale signs of a sankie. I married a Dominican women that I met while sent here to the DR to work 7 years ago and she certainly wasn't a sankiette so meeting someone serious is a possiblity. The problem as I see it with the locals on the coast is that they have a different "mindset" that the Dominicans from the the interior. First of all for the majority of the Dominicans who are poor they have in general a well entrenched "belief" that all foreigners that visit here on vacation are personally wealthy. Second, many of these same Dominicans would prefer to live in NY than in the DR. Also, many aren't opposed to "business marriage" or "such" to in order to obtain the latter.

Keep these facts in mind. Who knows the guy you met may be serious but you really should be wary. As I said read these forums and learn about the sankie "play". As far as getting to know serious Dominican men they come in all varieties of course and you can learn some things to about the Dominican "mentality" in these forums.

I agree, from conversations I've had with some Dominican men they assume you are wealthy. I try to break it down to them and explain but I'm not sure if they belive me anyhow?

I think she is referring to culture. American culture compared to Caribbean/West Indian culture.

To be a sankie has nothing to do with race. A good example of this is our dear senator from Massachusetts John Kerry.

When the word sankie is mentioned, the first name that come to my mine is John Kerry. This guy deserves all the credit as a Sankie, not joke.

He is a Sankie at a whole different lever. I will put him in the same category of Rubirosa, the greatest sankie ever.
