Default Best Coffee & Restaurants in Colonial City

Hola Amigos

At the end of December I'll be in SD for 10 days, staying in the Colonial City and using this as a base to tour the country and SD.

So, where are the best places to have a cup of coffee, eat local cusine and eat bakery foods - all at a great price while contributing to the local economy.

Gracias, Leonardo

La Cafetera del Conde for coffee; Mesón de Bari (Calle Hostos) for local cuisine, and the French-style bakery on Calle Isabel La Católica.

There are other options, but those three would be my choice.

Second the Cafeteria on the Conde. Two good bakeries on Mercedes (corner of Jose Reyes and 19 de Marzon, I think). As Chiri knows, I refer food suggestions to her! I am probably better for beer suggestions (Parque Duarte and El Sarten, on Hostos).

Local Cuisine and snacks:

Comedor Mimosa, Arzobispo Nouel between Duarte and Hostos.
Delicias Dominicanas, Santome between Jose Gabriel Garcia and Portes
Virginia Exquisiteces, Santome and corner with Portes

As Chirimoya pointed, Meson de Bari would be a wonderful place to try out the local cuisine, also if you like having a couple of drinks make sure you visit Meson de Bari on a saturday between 4:00 and 7:00 PM...you won't regret it.

Thumbs up on Mimosa! If I see a restaurant is packed with locals that is generally a good indicator the food is great.

Mimosa is excellent. Try the goat stew. But they arent cheap and some people claim that they fudge the bill a bit. Ojo pelao. Believe it or not the Mercure hotel restaurant is pretty good for the plato del dia, and of course there is the Meson de Luis right across the street on Hostos. At night there are several optoins, but sadly most of the high end restaurants have been forced to close. Coffee, definitely La Cafetera, for the local color (despite the fact that the place is quite colorless really) and the excellent coffee (which you can buy at 80 pesos a pound to take home.) There are other good coffee places too though.

If you want any advice on the zone or places of interest to see, where to stay, whatever, PM me. The zone is my favorite place to be.

I'll have to check out this Mimosa place. Has it always been there and I've never noticed it, or is it new?

been there for ages, Chiri, across the street from the Iranian rugman's little shop. recently remodeled this week. A nice place, good cooking. I often eat in various comedores around the zone as well, the cheap-o places where dominican workers gather, and I like them too. One shouldnt be afraid to venture into these places. Mimosa is more of a restaurant than a humble comedor, as their selection is usually quite large and their prices are higher than the average comedor, which nowadays charge 60 to 70 pesos for the plato del dia.

Oh there is another restaurant we all forgot to mention, but it is a nighttime place -- La Macia, if I remember the name correctly, over on Arzobispo Portes. Spanish tapas and such things, live acoustic music, and not pricey. Been there ages. A popular and fun place.

Mimosa is definitely the best option for lunch. Nobody competes with their plato del dia in my opinion, one of the best in the city.
