If you're ever in Jarabacoa, stop into the Monte Alto plant just across the river downtown, and get some of their organic roasted beans. Outstanding. And the trip to Jarabacoa iv very nice, too. Great little town.

You should not put the beans/coffee in the freezer. I don't know where people got that idea from?? Keep the coffee/beans in a air tight jar.

Use it/them soon after purchasing for the best taste. Grind the beans right before you are going to make the coffee.

If you drink a 1 pound a week buy a pound. Don't buy 10. You want them as fresh as possible!

Enjoy!!!!

Thanks for everyones help-- I went to both. La Cafeteria and El Mercado.

My friend is enjoying a cup from La Cafeteria as I am writing this! She'll be doing a taste test!

Well, the verdict is finally in--- my friend liked the coffee better from the coffee place on Mella. She felt that it was smoother. She felt that the coffee beans from La Cafeteria had a bite to them--not bitter or oily but a bite. She enjoyed it but preferred the other.

Her only complaint was that she wishes that it was a darker???? roast.

So... there you have it... for whatever it's worth in the grand scheme of things.

The store is a "cafeteria" called "La Cafetera" (the coffee pot).

Darker roasts are ill advised. The medium roast is actually best if you know how to make decent espresso or cappucino, or even make the coffee Dominican style in a Greca. this dark roast thing comes from Americans who drink too much Starbucks. Even in Italy, home of the greatest espresso preparations, dark roasts are eschewed in favor or medium roast.

The place in the Conde (La Cafeteria) is this the previous Cafe Colonial?
At this place I've got my cafe beans (Banilejos) back in the early 90s.

couldnt say, GALK; so far as I know it has always been called La Cafetera. It is a famous gathering place for the zone's eccentrics. the building is quite old and has unique balconies. the current owner took it over from his dad, I believe, and he keeps it going but I believe that his real vocation is as a prof at the UASD.
