Default Zona Universitaria

Hi

It looks like I may be going to the DR alone after all (I posted a couple of weeks ago asking about safety but then decided to postpone my trip as my friend wanted to come). I am probably going to be taking a Spanish course in SD and the school is located in the Zona Universitaria. Can anyone tell me how far this is from the Zona Colonial and what kind of area it is?

Thanks very much

Generally a pleasant area, depending on which street you are on. Will you be living there or in the Colonial Zone?

The UASD state university campus is located in the Zona Universitaria, as its name suggests. It's not too far from the Colonial Zone, and well-served by carros públicos (shared taxis) on Avenida Independencia (travelling from the Zona Universitaria to the Zona Colonial) and Avenida Bolivar (vice-versa).

The only problem with Zona Universitaria is that it's currently affected by the Metro construction on Avenida Máximo Gómez which has resulted in traffic diversions into what was a relatively quiet residential area. Another problem that some people mention is that when there is student unrest at the university you might be affected, but this is not so common these days.

Thanks very much for your response. I am not quite sure where I will be liviing as I am going to request a homestay and that could be anything from 10-40 minutes away by public transport.

Would you say it was possible to walk from Zona Universitaria to Zona Colonia? If so how long do you think it would take?

Thanks!

It would be quite a long walk (30 mins?), and not advisable after the early part of the morning, due to the heat, or after late afternoon/early evening mainly for safety reasons. I'd say it would be about 2-3kms along the Malecon, Independencia or Bolivar Avenues.
