DR Cultural Correctness

OK...I'm confused. I'm coming back to the DR for a milestone birthday bash and would really like to be correct in my actions. I'm staying in the Colonial Zone. Shorts or no shorts? Daytime and evenings in La Plaza de Hispana. I am also planning on visiting many of the historical buildings, so what is the DR way of acceptable dress?

Also any suggestions on NICE hotels (Palacio, Discovery etc) would be appreciated. ($100US per night or less) I'll only hit this age once....it's such a milestone, I even have friends coming in to celebrate.....

OH and you're all invited to the party, Plaza de Hispana, June 9th...sunset til they throw me out...I hear they'e going to light a big cross that lights up the sky.... and the whole deal (joke) Thanks for your help!

No shorts for the birthday bash, everyone is going to look and dress nice, I would wear slacks and a short sleeve dress shirt or at least a collard oxford style shirt.

Wear your shorts at the beach, not to social gatherings or when touring the historical buildings.
