Default Buenos Aires de Hererra

Hello everyone,

Does anyone knows about the neigbourhood Buenos Aires de Herrera in Santo Domingo? What does it look like? And are there any hotels in this neigbourhood?

Thank you very much!
Estrella

Not 100% sure but I think it's the barrio. I don't think there are any hotels. If this this is the Herrera that I know.

It's a very poor barrio with a rough reputation.

Are there any nice areas or sections of it or is it all bad? In NYC you can have a rough neighborhood but their can be blocks or pockets that can be very nice.

i lived in las palmas de herrera which i think is next door. it was pretty much a very poor barrio but not as bad as some. my wife just yelled in from the other room that buenas aires is worse and it is close by. this was 12 years ago, beer was cheap, there were no drugs, sometimes we had water, i am a blonde/blue gringo, i walked all over the place, never had a problem. i have had problems in the "good areas." now i have a beautiful apt in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city but looking back i probably had the best time when i lived there. i remember leaving and felt a terrible sadness. i still go back as some of my best friends are still there..............

While we're on the topic---- How is Altagracia south of Herrera?

I have a question. I know what a barrio is. They are generally working poor. But in NYC dead center in the middle of the barrio will be gorgeous houses where wealthy blacks will live. They want to live with other blacks and they do. The houses are astounding. Their block will be well taken care of. The surrounding area will be horrible but that block will be amazing.

Where do the wealthier poor live? The ones that aren't very poor. They may have come from poverty but did well for themselves but they aren't wealthy enough to afford the wealthy areas. Maybe they don't want to live with the ex'pats. They want to stay with their own but they're not educated but they want their kids to have a better life.

Do you know what I'm saying?

I got it-- Where do the working poor go when they do better for themseves?

There are plenty of lower-middle class areas - or, similar to what you describe, some cases of large houses, mansions even, in poor barrios built by barrio dwellers who made a lot of money, or relatives of someone who made money, but don't want to leave "mi gente". There was the case of an alleged narco who had built his parents a mansion in the middle of a really poor barrio, for example.

Thanks---I wasn't thinking of drug dealers but you can certainly do it that way. It's much quicker and easier. I was thinking more on the lines of people who went to school and bettered themselves or had a business that did well--however that may be.

Some are criminals, some are baseball players, and others are ordinary people who made a lot of money. The narco was just an extreme example.
