.::Welcome to carey House Hotel::. Chiri, it was Dominican friends that live near it that recommended it, I was delighted, its little gems like this you dont get to hear about, and I remember thinking I have to post this on DR1 as so many people are always looking for good budget accommodation. It was only because they had closed the Malecon for the music festival on Sunday and you couldnt get to the hotels, even the Renaissences' gates were closed, that I was referred there and I was so pleased as it saved me $$$$$$$$$$$$

I have stayed at Atarazana, Mercure, Carey House, Jaragua, and Hotel Venezia.

Hotel Mercure is centrally located right on El Conde. Book online and pay in advance the rate is about $60 USD with taxes.

Hotel Atarazana is in a very quiet area about two blocks from Plaza Espana. Probably not the best location if you intend to go out late at night.

Carey House Hotel, again another hotel in a quiet residencial area.

Jaragua Hotel/Casino is top shelf if you want the tall modern hotel with a casino.

Hotel Venezia is located a few blocks from Parque Indenpendencia and maybe 5 blocks to Pacos Restaurante.
located in the heart of Santo Domingo

I think you might enjoy Hotel Mercure. Walk out the front door and you smack dab in the middles of Zona Colonial. There is also a small club, Nowhere, right across the street. The price you pay for the room also includes a free buffet breakfast.

A good source of information on Zona Colonial is:

Check out Dock at the Acropolis on Winston Churchill ave for pre-drinking. Cabs are cheap, and it's not far from Loft (Tiradentes y Carlos Sanchez), or Praia.

Sofitel Nicolas is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend it. It is also in the heart of the Colonial Zone, very well situated.

Thanks everyone! Ive heard alot about Loft, Liquid and Praia...Are they more upscale type places? We want to see as much as we can but dont want to go anywhere too pretentious - we get enough of that here in Vancouver ;P and we definitely want to go to places that have an awesome dance vibe (no techo please)
