Pollo Rey on El Conde is usually the best rate.

If you know the current exchange rate and what Pollo Rey is paying you can negotiate a great rate with the nice guy in the blue van who sits in front of Hotel Mercure / Meson de Luis (corner of Conde y Hostos)....he's always straight with me.

Paco's cafeteria is also known for paying a little more than the rest.

The amount you want to exchange also plays into what you get for your money.

there are 3 places that are the best exchange on a daily basis...polo rey and franks on el conde, and the caribe tour store on mella. They are always 10 to 30 centavos more than anyone else around.

I agree with the other posters who say the Pollo Rey is a place to get a good exchange rate; but beware of those locations and people who do this on the side of the road - - who may give you a great rate that is just unbelievable as they give you bogus money. Lots of counterfiet bills floating around.

The guy in the blue van (Exchange Movil) in front of Meson de Luis has been there for over a year. He had a store front next to the restaurant, but like many things in the DR....fell apart. I've never gotten bad money, although I always count in front of them after the transaction....check your money TWICE.....spend it once!

Meson de Luis will also exchange money although I don't think it is the best rates. I have seen him do it for tourists late in the evening when the others are closed.

Default Hi

As was mentioned, Franks on El Conde (Colonial Zone) will give you a very good rate but if you are not heading to the Colonial Zone, you can simply walk down Maximo Gomez to one of the major Banks and exchange money there. NEVER change money on the street (and I would not change money with the "guy in the blue van" even though others say he is reputable).

What time do Franks, Pollo Rey and Caribe Tours close? I get into SDQ at 5:30pm so I guess it'll take at least an hour to get my bag, clear customs and catch a taxi into town. Any other options open around 7:00pm? I do have an ATM card as well. Thanks.

i dont know about franks or caribe tours but the pollo rey on el conde is usually open pretty late. when i was out and about in the ZC at night (past 11pm), they were always one of the last businesses still open (unless things have changed since april).

In front of Hotel mercure is a restaurant and its open pretty late.

Rates are not as good as the others, but a good last minute option.
