You can google for free self help programmes like
Fear of Flying: FREE Online Fear of Flying Self Help Course

Fear of Flying Accept your Feelings
click on green links on left of page

There are also programmes which have fees - never having undertaken one I couldn't recommend one so I won't post any links.

or join message boards for aviophobics & meet others similarly suffering (& probably wind each other up something awful )
Fear of Flying Support - Message Board - ezboard.com

or you could try a behaviour therapy known as systematic desensitisation which is about learning to relax in situations which produce the panic.

Like all phobias it isn't based in rational thought or knowledge and it IS eminently treatable.

in order to relax lean forward and put your head between your knees while breathing slowly...if this doesnt work put your head between someone elses knees...it will make the time fly by and you will soon be at your destination

Even though I have done extensive travelling, I feel the same way still...every time I board a plane I marvel at the miracle of flying and never take it for granted.

If that doesn't do it, nothing will.

Are you sure that dose wont put you to sleep for the entire first week of your vacation?

Default Halcyon

For longer flights I take Halcyon. I can take a pill on the runway in LAX and not wake-up until landing in SYD or SEL. No anxiety at all, dead to the world asleep. In fact I recall nothing concerning the flights. Of course the Brits banned the drug.

I had a bit of a freak out flying in from the states, with my gravol...I woke up in a daze...we were just about to land , the plane was soooo low just about to hit the runway, I looked at my watch and forgot about the time difference, i thought we had another hour of flight left...but No...i have to scare the crap outta everyone...yelling and screaming...
"WHY ARE WE SO LOW...WHATS HAPPENING-ARE WE GONNA CRASH"
yea so now i just take the recommended dose of gravol...
