Default Afro-Americans vacationing in DR

Saludos. Esta es mi pregunta, a ver si me pueden ayudar. I have a couple of black female friends going to DR for the first time, van para Santo domingo y las playas around that area (juan dolio, boca chica). They asked me what places they could check out but i have no idea. Ellas quieren bailer conocer gente etc.. Vacacionar. Que recomiendan ustedes quienes viven alla? ya que yo vivo en Nueva York y tengo mas de 1 year que no voy. Bars, clubs, lounges? all the cool fun places. i just want them to have fun and not think DR es una pura porqueria. Gracias.

PERDONEN LA FALTA DE ACENTOS DON'T KNOW HOW TO WRITE THEM ON A MAC.

Corazon, escribe todo lo que quieras pero hazlo en un solo idioma, no mezcles los dos en un solo 'post', porfavor.

Quite honest I dont think that Santo Domingo people are kind of cool when it come to race, if one of your friend by any chance is talking to another tourist
with different race by the hotel security she is a cuero or sanky, when it comes to safety not much at that area.

I would prob. recomend Bayahibe, Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. especially for woman travelling alone. Santo Domingo/Boca chica / Juan Dolio, can be super fun if they know someone who knows the area that would take them around.

You just classified 3/4 of the country as "Sankies" Or "Cueros"...

To the OP: Any place that you went a year back is going to be the same now, just recall them...
If you're just trying to show them the "high rollers" spots in Santo Domingo, keep in mind that money sets the rules. The more, the better...

Any all inclusive will make the cut for them.

i really don't think DR is a crappy place. We have the good and the bad. My real concern was having them encounter racism not only because they are black but also because they don't speak a lot of spanish. I fear that if they try to go into any club they'll be mistaken for Haitianas and be harrased and come back with that experience in mind and share with others and further drag our poor country's image, cause it's not low enough. I almost told them to go to PR instead but they already bought the tickets. Then again PR are just as racist if not more, but at least there they're still in US land.

why would african-americans be mistaken for Haitians ?

your friends some do more research when considering visiting any country. like learn the ways of the country like the language. this helps avoid a lot of agony. quite a few african american women have told me they did not like the DR for many reasons but i suspect the general reason being unprepared.
a very wrong perception of a lot of americans black/white is that english is spoken everywhere and i don't need to learn a different language..WRONG !!!

Thumbs up

My partner and I are both African Americans. We've been traveling to DR- specifically Santo Domingo, but have been through much of the country- for years and have never felt any racial anything.

There are also quite a few African American expats in Dr (some are women), especially Santo Domingo. When we meet up with friends, whether Dominican or African American or Canadian or what have you, race is rarely if ever part of the conversation. That's because while moving throughout the country, be it guest houses, hotels, restaurants, car rentals, bars, clubs, supermarkets (I love La Sirena by the way), etc. race has never played a factor in what we do or how we're treated.

That being said, I have heard a story or two where African American women were mistreated (sexually harassed, cat calls and the like), with racist overtones. Overall though, we know quite a few sisters who come and go without a problem.

While there are racial issues in DR, I feel much more at home in DR than say, Boston. As a foreign traveler and especially as a tourist, DR for the most part is all about the benjamins in all their cartoonish hues. Your mileage may vary, but tell your friends the water's fine
