Thumbs up Maison Gautreaux Hotel - My Experiences

I received several PMs regarding my posts about the Maison Gautreaux Hotel. I figured that I would share my experiences and opinions about this hotel for others who are visiting the Santo Domingo area.

This is NOT a paid endorsement of this hotel, this is just my opinion based upon my experiences - -

First, I am a American tourist who visits Santo Domingo several times per year and this is the 4 different hotel that I have stayed at during my 15 trips to the Dominican Republic. My first hotel was the Jaragua, which is a Marriott property. I like it and found it nice. The price was comprable to most U.S. style hotels at like $100 to $130 usd per day. After getting used to the DR and wanting to come back and visit more often, I figured I would try to stay in a place that was nice, but less expensive for my budget.

During a few later trips to the DR, I tried to the Mecure hotel on El Conde. The price was ok and was like $55 per day. The rooms were clean and fairly small. They offered a free breakfast, but the staff and managment were not the most friendly. I like it, but the location was on El Conde where all of the tourist seem to find themselves but it was to far away from the Casinos and the Malecon. So after a couple of days in that hotel, I kept searching.

On my next trip, I tried the Maison Gautreaux - I did not know much about this place before going there, so I did all of my homework. I asked others on DR1 about this place and got good reivews including Robert who told me that he knew the owners who are a well known family from Santo Domingo. So, I emailed the owner of the hotel with a host of questions on like 4 or 5 different occasions. He answered them all and made me feel very comfortable and welcome. So I decided to book a week there and off I went.

I arrived and was taken to my room, It had a king bed, a small refrigorator, A/C, a private bath with plenty of towels, color TV and a safety box with combination. I thought it was great. The price at that time was $45 dollars per day. I stayed and enjoyed it. After the first night, I woked up to continental breakfast and met with the owner and his wife. They were just wonderful people and made me feel completely welcome.

I have stayed there now 11 times, and referred many many people to the hotel. The staff is great and you will just fall in love with the front desk staff and cleaning crew. The armed guards at the front made me feel totally safe and they spoke very good English as well as Spanish and French.

I understand that rate is depening on the type and size of room, as well as the number of days that you plan to stay. I found it best to email the owner of the hotel directly for reservations versus going through one of those web based reservation systems. This way, the rate was confired and I had a name who I use if I encountered an issue with check-in.

Their website is http://www.maisongautreaux.net

The owners email is jggm@maisongautreaux.net or emfg@maisongautreaux.net

I also found the food in the restaurant to be quite good. I am kind of picky about what I eat, but the Chef at the restaurant made food for me that was to my liking and exactly what I requested. I was very good.

The prices for this hotel are most likely on the website, but if not, I am sure that you can email the owner for a good rate. The location is the BEST!

There are many great hotels that have great success stories. This is just one more for those who wish to give it a try.

Anyone who has more specific questions is free to drop me an email or PM me.

David

Been to Maison Gautreaux Hotel also and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a place to throw their hat while touring SD. Completely secure for the female travellers who might be on their own.

I tried to get on the website but got blank screen. It must be that all the DR1 traffic has jammed the site !

Too much business........ hope the downtime is temporary

There was a typo in DAKRA's link.

I have fixed it so either link will work.

Default Nice......( not bad or great ).......but nice !

Maison Gautreaux Hotel is "OK" and nothing more!

Yes, its priced for the budget'd traveller but so is Hotel Residence and many others. Its not ideal for a single women, nor family to walk around safe outside at night, but a single man with a guest ( sure)! No scenaric veiws, and mediocore street parking. I recently visited a freind there.

The reason Im responding is because you have an overwhelming amount of posts soley dedicated to this specific hotel.

People should be aware of the beautiful decor at CoCo boutique, Atarzan, or the historical value of Palacio and even the location value of Mercure. All of these are much better for a few dollars more.
Backpackers stay in hostel, missionaries stay with host, so who are targeting with all this free promotioin.
( DAKRA ) anyone who visits the DR 7 times a year over the last 2 years should be in they're own apartment or apart-hotel by now, paying much less then hotel rates. Unless your getting paid or your receiving special perx why would you promote this hotel with such a passion. Its surrended by casinoes and hookers in every direction lets be honest.
So to any travellers on a strict budget just remeber you will need a taxi everytime you walk outside this hotel, to go anywhere of importance!

I've been there and many others hotels, small bed and breakfast, to the exspensive and overrated, and I still say Maison Gautreaux is only good just for its daily rate and thats it nothing more!

\( Im drinking "BRUGAL" in LOS MINA right now so by no means Im I trying to be spiteful or disrespecting but i believe that first time tourist should have variety in their chooses).
