go online at yahoo.com and rent from one of the major compainies and you may pay a few dollars more but will not have any unforseen nightmares afterward. Trust me on this. I only use Avis,Budget or National personally.

There are some reports that National Car Rental, or more likely, someone who works (worked) for National Car Rental may quite possibly have been involved in credit card fraud schemes in recent months. If you do a search of these forums, you will see some recent discussions about credit card frauds reportedly involving National.

Several posters, including myself have experienced fraudulent use of credit cards after dealing with National in the DR. To be sure, National, or anyone who works for National have not yet been publicly implicated for credit card fraud as of yet, that I know or heard of??..................

Default Avis

I have had very good service from Avis. The price has always been competative but I usually reserve way in advance. Pickup and dropoff have been quick and efficient. The cars are always clean though sometimes a little dinged up. I always carefully note the dings before I accept the car. I have never been hassled when I return it about additional dings from the "sleeping policemen" or speed bumps that are so prevalent. I have not used others but would suggest you stay with the large companies to avoid issues.

Many will warn you against using a non name brand agency but Moderca which is 25-50mts on your left at the turn in for National Car Rental by the toll booth coming into town has always been straight with me. No frills $30-$35 dollar cars all the way up to shiny 4x4's and everything in between. I've had several scrapes and dings and they rarely, if ever charge me for any of them.

Of all the people I've done business with in the DR these guys are arguably the most fair and honest. Many will tell horror stories of "pirate" rental companies but these guys are way better than the corporate places.

My experiences with many of the name brand corporate places has been frustrating and filled with hidden costs & fees. With Ramon at Moderca, you just get what you pay for and you get it with a smile. They do offer pick up and drop off as well.

I have used many of the name brand places: Avis, Budget and National and have had good experiences with all three. However, on my last 3 trips to DR I have used Europcar and have gotten the best deals with them each and every time I fly into SDQ. It also helps to get business cards and establish friendships with the representatives. I always keep business cards of everyone I have dealt with and now just make a phonecall prior to flying and the Europcar representatives have come through for me each and every time. Special shout and thanks to the representatives in the Avenida Independencia branch, they were the most courteous and accomodating. My average price for an 'Economy' car [anywhere from Kia Picanto to Mitsubish Lancer depending on what is available] has been between $17 and $21 a day. I am not complaning!

I am just curious. Do all of the car rental outfits mentioned here require a deposit or a hold on your credit card? And, do the rates quoted include insurance?
