Sorry, but reading all the rediculous and naive comments throughout this forum here make my eyes bleed (Hello mikey007, did you even spend one day of your life in Juan Dolio (and not only in Villas Del Mar or your vacation club) or are you just trying to sell real estate with the means of false advertising? Please, try and keep your fingers off the keyboard. Your post are always faaaar off)...
I'm actually no fan at all of the construction going on but there were always drowned victims in Juan Dolio and not just since the beach renovation a couple years back. There have always been reports of drowned tourists the same as there always have people been missing at sea. The coastlines are also always changing - especially after Hurricane "George" in 1998 took some hugh bites out of the beaches...
The currents are simply a result of mother natures flood & tide which at times cause a heavy draft through the holes in the coral-reef parallel to the shoreline. The tides are sucking water out of the mostly shallow area between shoreline and the reef in front of it or pushing the water into it. Any SCUBA diver or an experienced snorkler knows these facts, knows when and where to go swimming and most of all they know the physical limits of oneself! The exaggerated self-esteem of most weekend swimmers is the main reason for drowning and not the modified coastline, which will always undergo some changes. Most of the drowned victims simply went way to far outside at sea and in addtion were under the influence of alcohol... when in this moment flood or tide comes in, suddenly the current will get stronger and one needs to have some reserves left to reach shore and not get exhausted after a few strokes. If you stay close to the shore nothing will happen to you, but underestimating the forces of nature can be deadly.
Dream on!

I have been in Juan Dolio for 8 years - the first 4 as a diving instructor here - based at Talanquera hotel so I was well aware of how many drownings there were each year, as the diving school were often involved. There have been significantly more since the coastline was changed, the reef damaged and new jetties built out of rock between the different projects. I do not disagree that some drownings may have been due to alchohol, but several that I know of were not. Some were people who could not swim but were pulled under by rip currents even in shallow water, and some were experienced swimmers. Some were Haitian construction workers cooling off after a day at work, and some were weekend visitors. Having spoken extensively to local fishermen and others who know the water and the currents well, they are all in agreement that the stronger currents are a recent phenomenen. Also I had meetings today with Media Ambiente and Oceanographers, here on the beach in Juan Dolio and they are now conducting a study to try and resolve the situation. The most dangerous area appears to be in front of what was the Melia hotel. What we need to do is try and ascertain exactly why the currents have increased in that area, if anything can be done to reverse the situation (remove the jetties, rebuild the reef) and to improve water safety measures such as lifeguards, lifebuoys, appropriate warnings etc.

That's right, but very basic. Try this. Dump an artificial island in the ocean and see if it changes the flow pattern. I can guarantee that will happen, modelling flow patterns can be pretty complex stuff sometimes.

It just seems logical that anytime you take an unhindered waterflow (such as a shore area) and make it considerably narrower (jetties, and man-made reefs, etc) the force of the water exiting is going to increase. When the water flow increases, it's going to create a stronger pull as it rushes to exit the area and flow past the barriers.
Perhaps alcohol has figured in some and that's sad. But by building the reefs and barriers, it gives the impression that is is a safe swimming area. When infact it makes it more dangerous.
Matilda, I'm glad you were able to have those meetings today. Hopefully, much good will come from them!

Hey frank looks like there will be a huge demand for rentals and food from the various restaurants in the area now if they could fix those potholes on the boulevard and have a bikini parade lol lol
