You should live where we do!!!
Impossible to keep our balconey windows open some days/nights and the smell is definitely sewage.
For one I know our septic tanks (there's 2) need to be pumped out.
Second.....There are no 'working' sewage pipes DRCHRIS - just the ones that were buried that began and ended nowhere and aren't connected to anything including each other!!
There are a lot of ppl in the area at present and I'm sure ours isn't the only septic system that needs to be emptied.
The 'swamp' across the street from us is definitely contributing to the smell (hopefully Aquabella WILL start construction in the next week or two and alleviate that source!), however it is the ONLY swamp in the area that I know about (yes there IS a large swamp outside SPM but we don't smell it here) so it isn't entirely that.
There has been a lot of rain in the past few months and the ground is still saturated so some of the smell eminates from 40 yrs of septics that have their 'filtrantes' (SP) drilled into the coral so the natural action of the tides can carry the effluent out to sea. Most of the ground in the area (especially old JD) is contaminated.
Also all the new construction has opened up some largely forgotten, previous septic systems so the contaminated soil is now 'off-gassing'.
Remember also that most of the wells in the aea are contaminated (mainly caused by wells being dug within 50 yards of the next buildings' septic) so they also contribute to the odour. A friend of ours recently installed and automatic system that adds clorine directly to the well because the smell was so bad they couldn't stand it (how they can use it to shower, wash cloths/dishes etc. I don't know!!??)
Also keep in mind that for many, many years when a septic tank was full, the owner hired someone to clean it. This was done in the middle of the night when the 'cleaner' opened the tank, shovel the residue into pails, took the pails to the beach where he dug a hole into which the pails were emptied and then the sand was placed on top to cover same.
I realise this isn't very scientific but it IS the REALITY of sewage treatment facilities here in Juan Dolio based on what I have personally observed since 1990.
