The USA market is indeed in a drift- the general economy is ok- and real estate, construction and finance predominate the "value" plays in todays stock picking. The difference is that we can measure the risk in the market, the developers and builders that are listed and publicly traded based on earnings and the certified quarterly reports. In the DR we are projected an image- however the transparence behind it is lacking.
In the USA and in the Dr as well, you can put lipstick on a pig, dress it in fine silks, parade it around and it is still a pig. In all honesty, there is a significan investment in dressing in the Dr- such as the article positioned above.
Today's FOX special on mud eating in Haiti doesn't add much to the argument.

from DR1 today:
"Housing feels crunch
The president of the Housing Constructors and Promoter's Association (ACOPROVI) Jaime Gonzalez says that in the last 30 days, costs of construction materials have gone up 25%. At the same time, he said new home sales are down 50% in March and April. Gonzalez expressed concerns that prices could further escalate once the 16 May election has come and gone. Gonzalez asks the government to take actions to prevent instability in the sector."
It would be unreasonable to expect the DR to be immune to a global epidemic.

The situation in Haiti has strong ramifications for the DR, and those who have exposure ot the island are very well aware of it. Furthermore, and unstable and unsettling situation in Haiti is much more of a Dominican problem, and concern for all of us, than the Mexican situation in the United States- I fail to see a reasonable comparison.
With respect to construction costs, the increases in the DR, and their impact on bottom lines are quickly making construction and development there less attractive vis a vis the USA and others. If, in order to be competitive, Dominican contractors need to rely on massive haitian cheap labor to make margins possible, there is a darker day dawning should things truly get out of hand in the neighbors back yard.

Steve,
this project looks interesting- like the Arboleda projects in Miami. Not very impressive from the basic designs, but probably sellable to a larger crowd. This would appear to be more the type of project that the area can handle, considering that there are still 4 decent restaurants, lack of a really good school, clinic, water and sewer treatment facilities.

It will look nicer than current bushes of undeveloped land anyway . BTW besides of 4 ''decent restaurants'' there is a dozen more just between Police Station and Villas Del Mar . In the same area there are 2 international clinics and 1 dental clinic , Villas Del Mar International School . New Aqueduct is done with new pipes and good pressure . I don't know about your property but I am receiving fresh water today . And yes we all are missing sewer treatment plant yet !
