You mentioned the challenge of finding a flight? Where are you departing from?

From Edmonton, Alberta. There are only flights from here to Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. Sunquest shows they do packages from Edmonton to Santo Domingo but you still have to fly into Punta Cana and then take a 3 hr bus ride. The packages that do go into SD make several stops in the States and would take longer than taking the 3 hr bus ride.

Lexi....if you are buying a package you need to know the resort names and where they are located. Lots of times the advert says Santo Domingo but it's actually La romana (ie. Dominicus) or SPM/JD (ie. Santana beach, Costa Caribe) as there are no "resorts" in Santo Domingo. so flying into Punta Cana may not be all that bad......

Afterthought for lexi........why not post or PM us the names of the resorts....
A package may be your best bet (altho' as Dulce said you'd have to pay to have your 'friend' stay with you)
We could let you know exactly where the resorts are located!

Okay, here are the 2 choices I am looking at now and would LOVE to hear what you think would be best..

Flying in to PC and then taking the 3 hr bus ride to either:
1. Coral Costa Caribe
2. Barcelo Capella

Any thoughts??

I forgot to ask...does anyone know what it would be to pay to have a guest at the resort?

Default About the same

Lexi,
If you are not a picky eater, you will do just fine at either.

The people at Capella go out of their way to serve you. If you ask for Luis at the main dinning room, he will treat u like a princess, but give him a nice tip at the end of your trip or bring him a baseball cap, or ask for Milagros, really nice hard working girl, she will have your coffee and drinks on the table before u ask.

If you stay at Capella, at reception ask for Julio and ask him to give u a room on building 4 on the 2 or 3 floor, you can look at the sea from your window.

At Coral ask in the main dining room for Ivan Bello and he will also make sure your drinks are right on time.

I don't like the Coral (just personal-picky-opinion) but in general they should be about the same rate.

If you want to bring a guest it would be about 35 bucks canadian for a day-pass at Capella and your friend can be with you all day until 5 or 6 PM.

At Coral they also have night-pass for sale and that includes dinner and entrance to the disco with drinks.

If you stay at Coral, don't bother with the Italian a'l cart restaurant, but try to get reservations for the Dominican restaurant on the second floor from the main rest. Make sure it is not on the Dominican theme night, because it is their best thing, even with a Dominican band plyaing nice music while you eat.

I don't know if you like drinking, but ask for your alchohol drinks to be made with Brugal (again, personal choice) instead of those funny brand looking bottles they have.

One more thing if u stay at Capella, there is a nice little bar by the children's pool, if you come down in the morning you can enjoy the nice sun and shades of the palm trees without having to walk too far for your drinks.

PM if you want more details.

BTW,,,,,, how old are u?

MommC and Matilda can give u more detail about night life in Juan Dolio, there is a nice place across from Capella's parking lot with great food and music on Fridays.

Chiquittabanana - Thank you so much for your invaluable information!!!!

It truly is overwhelming all the information and PM's I have received regarding travelling to Juan Dolio. Everyone has really been so helpful and it is so nice to know how many wonderful people are not only on this site but in the DR.

I will be 32 next month.

Across the street from Capella is the Colonial Tropical which is also owned by Barcelo. If you buy your A1 package and book for Capella you could probrably switch your room to one at the Colonial. It would still include all your food and drinks at the Capella. You can have visitors at the Colonial Tropical. I am sure they would let you switch (as long as they are not all booked up) because Colonial is a cheaper rate.
Chiquittabanana, is that Chuck's Spots bar you are reffering to with the bands on Friday night? I have been trying to find out if they are still open.

That would be the 'Freedom Bar" run by an American if memory serves me well!
Just up the street of course is Guilia's Cafe with live music on Monday nights and the paella at El Meson is the best in the area!!
