I am not stupid and am well travelled but I always like to know as much as possible before I go.
I met someone on my last trip to Punta Cana and he lives in San Pedro de Macoris. (I know, I know!) He recommended Juan Dolio so that we can visit his family and friends. I have been reading everything I can about this area and there are so many negative postings about the resorts around here. Are they true or are these mostly from people who expect to be waited on 24/7?
Would Santo Domingo airport be the best place to fly into? How far is it to Juan Dolio from the SD airport?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

DR is a great place, just be smart about it and anyone can travel there alone. and if you are well travelled then this shouldnt be a problem, just sharpen up basic spanish and you are good to go. I am familiar with the Juan Dolio area and it is a quiet town. yes the resorts are not the greatest but who cares since your trip to DR should be more about seeing the island than to be shut in some resort. Juan Dolio has some really beautiful beaches so go for long walks around the coast and you will see some great stuff. are you renting a car? if so the best places to go asides from tourist infested Boca Chica is definately San Pedro de Macoris, very busy town, lots of people. it might scare you at first since it is busy, crowded, can get congested, but if you wanna party be sure to head over to the Malecon. it gets going at night and the locales are nice, next to the water, set the mood if you want....i really enjoy it in SPDMacoris, never complain about the malecon, the bars or the folks. just make sure you make it back to your room [wherever that may be]. any further suggestions feel free to ask!
