Default Travel to Juan Dolio

Hi Everyone,

I am thinking about travelling to Juan Dolio by myself (female) and am wondering if anyone has any tips for me? My girlfriend was supposed to come with me but unfortunately can't make it and I still want to go. Is it safe for a single female to travel to? I am not stupid and am well travelled but I always like to know as much as possible before I go.

I met someone on my last trip to Punta Cana and he lives in San Pedro de Macoris. (I know, I know!) He recommended Juan Dolio so that we can visit his family and friends. I have been reading everything I can about this area and there are so many negative postings about the resorts around here. Are they true or are these mostly from people who expect to be waited on 24/7?

Would Santo Domingo airport be the best place to fly into? How far is it to Juan Dolio from the SD airport?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

DR is a great place, just be smart about it and anyone can travel there alone. and if you are well travelled then this shouldnt be a problem, just sharpen up basic spanish and you are good to go. I am familiar with the Juan Dolio area and it is a quiet town. yes the resorts are not the greatest but who cares since your trip to DR should be more about seeing the island than to be shut in some resort. Juan Dolio has some really beautiful beaches so go for long walks around the coast and you will see some great stuff. are you renting a car? if so the best places to go asides from tourist infested Boca Chica is definately San Pedro de Macoris, very busy town, lots of people. it might scare you at first since it is busy, crowded, can get congested, but if you wanna party be sure to head over to the Malecon. it gets going at night and the locales are nice, next to the water, set the mood if you want....i really enjoy it in SPDMacoris, never complain about the malecon, the bars or the folks. just make sure you make it back to your room [wherever that may be]. any further suggestions feel free to ask!

J

Fly to Santo Dominog - 25 mins to Juan Dolio. It's pretty safe here, I lived on my own for the first year with no trouble at all. Plenty of options of places to stay. If you want to know more pm me

Default No Problemo!

You can stay at Costa Caribe or La Capella if you want a good AI resort.
Watch out that your sankie doesn't play you and make sure you ALWAYS use condoms!! HIV/Aids is an epidemic here.
If you want a nice room without the AI you can try Plaza Perla Mar that have room rentals-A/C, fridge/private bathroom - right on the beach in old Juan Dolio or Plaza Real or Colonial Tropical in the Villas del Mar section of JD.
Matilda can give you the contact # or PM me for the # for Plaza Perla Mar.
Dončt wear jewelry or flash wads of money or you might lose more than a finger like the fool in Punta Cana!
Come down, have fun and enjoy the beach, sun and sand !

HI Everyone!
Thanks for the advice. I have been looking into flying in to SD but from my city there are none. I would have to go on a milk run all through the States and it would take me about 20 flying hours to get there with 4 stops. There are direct flights into Punta Cana with only 6 1/2 hours flying but then I would have to take a bus there. Has anyone taken this bus? How was it?

Can anyone tell me what San Pedro de macoris is like? oh and the person I am meeting down there suggested I stay at Talanquera? I have read not the best reviews about this hotel...anyone have any comments about it?

Thanks everyone! You have all been really helpful!

A 3 star at best......probably only 2 1/2. Friends just left two weeks ago, said the room was small but clean, bed lumpy and food went right through you. However if you want an inexpensive place to sleep and take breakfast with most other meals off the resort, the price is right!

It sounds like you will be visiting with your friend while you are in Juan Dolio. You should keep in mind that at the All Inclusive's you will have to pay for him to visit you. You have many choices in JD. Ask your friend to check on Plaza Real, Plaza Azul, Hotel Europa or something along those lines.
