Locks for Safes at Hamaca - Does anyone know if you still have to pay to rent a lock to put on the safes in the rooms. When we were there last year, they were charging $15 per lock for the week?

kobi - we're going on March 22nd. Hope you'll be able to post a trip report before we go.
I love staying at the Hamaca. I never understood, though, why a guest would have to pay for a lock for a safe.
We did have a problem a couple of years ago. My son's watch went missing from the room. We reported it to security, and they keep a record of how many times, and at what times your door was opened by your key card. The watch went missing while we were off the resort and the room was entered. Now, we don't know if it was entered by maintenance or the cleaning staff (they were replacing curtains).
After we reported the watch missing, our maid became very unfriendly to us - we weren't accusing anyone, but maybe she got in trouble. After we got home, they "found" the watch - said it was under a little ledge inside of the safe. They mailed it to us. We completely checked the safe and there is a little space towards the front of the safe where something could be left behind (we knew about that and checked there).
Don't know what happened, but wish they would change those safes to the ones where you can set your own password.
Oh, and if you do pay cash for your lock rental, make sure you get a receipt -- one year they told us that we didn't pay for the lock upfront and tried to charge us again on checkout. We had to argue that one, and in the end they didn't charge us, but now we make sure we keep the receipt in a safe place.
Please don't think I'm trying to make too much of a big deal about this because we love staying at the Hamaca and will continue to vacation there.

Do you have to make reservations to eat at any of the specialty restaurants (Italian, Mexican, etc.)?
A few years ago we had to, and last year it was just first come, first served.

Tipping at Hamaca
We are leaving in a few days and were wondering what people are tipping at this resort? Does the staff prefer to be tipped in American dollars versus local currency? How can you ensure that you get a decent room at check-in (through tipping). Thank you.

hamaca
no the rest. are no reservations, about the locks consider having 550 rooms and making 3 dollars a day extra why would you want to buy new safes and give them away for free?ive been going to the hamaca 5 or 6 times a year for 15 years. i give the maid 3 dollars a day, that will get you all the water and towels that you need.tip decent and they dont care if its pesos or dollars. george

kobi - thanks for the info about not having to making reservations for the restuarants.
I can understand why the Hamaca would not want to install new safes and give them away for free, but since someone was able to get into our safe, I was just thinking that I would feel safer being able to set a password myself - and when you think about $3 a day for a safe, it really isn't that expensive - I made that comment because in all of the other places we've travelled to, we never had to pay for a lock.
Northeast - we tip our maid $5. When we are on the beach, we tip our bartender $5 and if we have more than a few drinks, tip an extra $1 for each drink.

Thanks jalencastro . The resort was renovated during past year . They still have some changes to make after this high season . More units will be renovated , Japanese restaurant and more sea view units to be build ( ''L'' shape building in the corner on the beach ) . Globalia Corp. owner of the Oasis Resorts investing a lot of $$$ into the resorts . And what I like about the beach of Oasis Hamaca that it's still protected from big waves by the coral reef but is located right at the end of this reef , so the water is moving over the reef bringing clean one from the open sea all the time and sea flows are pushing the water all the time toward public beach as well , that what makes it deferent from the rest of Boca Chica where water in most places is just stocked ...
