Default staying at sunscape casa del mar

this is our first visit to the Dominican Republic. We are staying at the sunscape casa del mar, but we really don't like AI . Any advice on what we can do and where to go from there on day trips? will we be safe going into Santo Domingo? Should we rent a car or take a taxi?
We have been to many other islands and are somewhat seasoned travelers and we love to discover the hidden jewels of a country instead of the boring buffets and overdrinking of the AI experience. We are not opposed to some rest on the beach however, and look forward to some down time with a good book, sun and sand. I speak a little Spanish tourist Spanish. I am 60 years old and thinking of retiring to someplace like DR or at least spending the winter months. We heard the country is really poor.will be bugged by kids begging? How should we handle that? Sorry so many questions. Thanks for your help Ron
