Christmas is just a few weeks away, it’s the usual run before la nochebuena and el año nuevo. In January all is back to “normal”. I had to slag off these guys (AMET and PN) three times this week.

Buying, stealing, borrowing or renting police uniforms with or without the officer inside them has been a popular way of committing crime here, especially on the main highway at night.

If the police that try to flag you down have bullets and gasoline to shoot at or chase you then they are not real cops so you should not stop.
If they do not have bullets and gasoline then you do not need to be stopping anyways - or so I have been told.

Dominican logic, I guess.

I was stopped in Santiago in October on Circunvalacion. It was supposedly a seatbelt and security check. My wife was with me(born and raised in Santiago) and she said to be very careful as the cop ask me to step out of the vehicle. While the cop was looking over my licence, registration and rental agreement she stayed in the car and would not come out. The cop gave me back my licence and papers and was fishing for money. My wife told him that I do not carry cash and only use my credit card. He then said to me I could go but he needed a little something for dinner, I leaned over and told my wife and she took 200 pesos from her purse and I handed it to him. She told me that sometimes these thieves in uniform will plant drugs in your vehicle if you are not careful and that is why she would not come out of the car. She also said that if you do not piece them off with a couple bucks they can make your life miserable and invent or create infractions, for example, all of a sudden now you have a smashed in tail light. I did not want to give that scumbag one peso and I agree that feeding them is not the right thing to do but I thought at the time it is probably not worth getting into a hassle with these cretins.
