being a Chopo is not necessarily related to financial worth. Many people with money are chopo while many of more moderate means are not.
It has to do with taste, class and manners. While it is true that it is difficult for a child raised in poverty to not be a chopo it is not impossible.

Use the net and go to La Academia de Espana you need this site to expand on the words that have Indian origin. Many of these words are listed there they are not slang, but words that made into the Spanish frim the new world.

Default Chopo

Where do they use the word chopo anyway? Maybe if I had mexican-American, nicaraguan-american or peruvian-american friends I would have heard it by now. Never heard it used in La Republica Dominicana. Maybe I should spend more time around NY city.

Just wondering, GN

Chopo is a strictly Dominican term. Other countries have their own words for the same type of people. In the US ther are many terms that are used.

Trailer Trash
K-Mart Shopper
Rap Artist
Democrat
ect.

My daughters boyfriend who is an American born Dominican from Washington Heights has never heard of this either. I asked my husband also who was born and raised in the DR and he has never heard of it either.

Default What I learned about history.

Hillbilly, I bet you were kicked below the belt when you called your novia a momasota, your wife doesn't want to hear that.

Prof. Calderon at the Museo de Hombre in SD teaches that there were an estimated 800,000 - 1 million people living on the island when the Spanish arrived. 80% were Taino, the Arawaks were about 15% and the Siboneys were the other 5%. The latter two groups were much less sophisticated, more war-like, and located on the North East part of the island. The movement up from Venezuela started I think around 1500 years ago and they now believe groups also came directly over from Belize at other times.

Default Back to the word "chopo"

it's commonly used to refer to low class people. Many middle class call their maids "chopa", but that's a pejorative name used by ignorant people that think themselves above others, most ofted misguided by their ignorance and typical Dominican arrogance. A chopo is a person with no education and no respect for women, a chopa is a woman that has no self-respect and hangs out with chopos.

Default I thought it was a word Golo coined for a

stereotypical Dominican......
There are many chopos (according to Golo's definition) that are educated and have substantial money.
I had the feeling from Golo's numerous posts regarding chopos that it was more of an attitude and way of living........
Can anyone clarify?
