Lightbulb A suggestion for summer learning.

I was thinking of something fun and different to do during the summer months.

I'm taking Spanish classes. I need the practice to use the proper verbs and nouns in the right places.

It would be a place to practice with the help of many of our Spanish speaking members. We could even throw in some Dominican Spanish to keep it DR related. Light hearted conversations, not too deep so that all newbies can keep up.

What do you all think? If we get enough people agreeing maybe Robert will give us a little spot of our own.

I like the idea, but like you said, we would need some Spanish speaking members to participate. Are you thinking of doing this in a chat room?

new words I learnt today

that and those

Aquel (far away) singular

aquel libro
aquella casa

plural

aquellos libros
aquellos casas

words I've never used

izquierda - left
la esquina- corner
la interseccion or bocacalle
la manzana - city block also apple
el semaforo - traffic light
el correo - post office
doble - turn
delante- front
derecho o recto- straight

Now are these words used the same in DR?

Anna my Spanish is limited too, but I have used some of those words whilst giving directions to taxi drivers in DR - they never had any problems understanding what I was saying. I get the impression that Dominicans would understand "spanish" spanish far more easily than Spaniards would understand "dominican" spanish.

BTW I think your idea is a good one, but I'm not sure that I would want to try and put my limited [and probably wrong] spanish down in writing for the whole world to see - could be a tad embarrassing

Anna,

Es una buena idea. Cuenta conmigo. Ya sabes cualquier pregunta que tengas me avisas y con gusto te ayudaré. Espero que todo salga bien.

My suggestion is that you come up with the guidelines on how the forum is going to work, you may want to add it to the thread or as the thread progresses suggestions can be added. You are correct the topics should be light so posters are encouraged to participate. DR related of course.

May I suggest a separate section for questions as they relate to Spanish usage? I am willing to help with vocabulary, grammar questions, etc. whatever it takes but those types of questions should be kept separate from the discussions so that they do not stray off course.

Here is a suggested name for the forum:

“el rincón español”

Anna,

All the vocabulary is standard (imo) except for:

* la manzana *- that’s more common in Peninsular Spanish (used in Spain)

* la cuadra *- more common in Latin America.

I think it's a great idea!
I am limited with my Spanish but I get around it because some of it sounds like Portuguese.
Left and right are said the same as Portuguese lol!
This would be great practice for me!

Idea buena Anna!
