Use por for by.
"This was written by me" would become "Esto fue escrito POR me".

To continue this topic, I always get confused on when to use "para" and when to use "por" for the English "for". Is there an easy guideline, or do you just need to memorize?

There is an easy way to remember.
Para is used when it is the end result.
Por is used when it is a means to the end.
I will give some examples.
Vamos para la vega would mean our destination was la vega
Vamos por la vega would mean we are passing though.

Esto fue ecrito por me means that this was written by me.
Esto fue escrito para me means it was written for me.

Does that help any?

Default Big topic for a simplified answer

Por and Para are one of the complexities of Spanish grammar.

1) The usage is not interchangeable.

2) I suggest you provide examples of 5 sentences in English with "for". Then I or (someone else) will tell you if it's "por" or "para" and why. I think if you understand the logic behind it meaning one over the other it will take you a long way.

I am sure there are complicated rules for the use of the words. But the simple rule I mentioned has always kept me out of trouble.

Default Stewart...

I agree but in order to answer the OP's question I think it would be most helpful to get a variety of examples. Hopefully some will be provided.
