Words like “this” and “that” are important to know. The Spanish forms of these words vary according to whether the item is masculine or feminine and whether you are pointing at one item or more than one.
This and These
this book---------este libro______________these books-------estos libros
this house--------esta casa_______________these houses------estas casas
There are two words for “this” (este, esta) and two words for “these” (estos, estas) depending on whether the nouns are masculine or feminine.
That and Those
that book-------ese libro__________those books--------eso libros
that house------esa casa___________those houses------esas casas
Again we have four possibilities (ese, esa, esos, esas). The story should end here, but it doesn’t. In Spanish there are four more ways of saying that and those.
