Default question

If "mar" means sea then what does "marea" mean?

There is a telenovela playing on TLN here in Toronto called "Contra viento y marea"

marea is tide (high tide) in the examples
The tele novela probably means 'against wind and wave' (they are obstacles)
you know like "hell and high water"

Sometimes vendors come around with "Dominican beach sushi", which is two or three kinds of raw seafood, served on a paper plate or a seashell with salsa. The squid is "lambi" and the octopus is "pulpo". It tastes great, but I wory about it because I don't know how to tell if the slices are fresh enough to not cause trouble. Any tips? I'll be back at the beach in a couple of weeks. Pedro Tercero

Squid is "calamar". "Lambí" is conch.

I've also heard it described as "viagra".
