Default Las etiquetas de los medicamentos

When living in a foreign country some survive without speaking the local language. However, there are times when speaking and understanding the local language is necessary in order to communicate, make the right choices, describe a problem, and read labels etc.

Being able to read and understand labels is important. Even those who speak Spanish don’t always understand what a term means much less someone who doesn’t.

Here are terms from an article in El Tiempo.com. It may be a good idea to make your own glossary.

Here’s a start:

● Libre de calorías o calorías ‘free’- 'calorie free'

● Bajo en calories- low calories

● 'Light' o 'Lite'- 'light'

● Bajo en sodio- low sodium

● Libre de grasa- fat free

● Bajo en grasa- low fat

● Libre de colesterol- colesterol free

● Alto en fibra- high fiber

● calorías- calories

● valor nutricional- nutritional value

● grasa- fat

● grasa saturada- saturated fat

● colesterol bueno- good colesterol

● glucosa en sangre- glucose (sugar) in the blood

● los hidratos de carbono- carbohydrates

● productos ‘ligeros’- 'light' products

Lesley, this is great. An added comment, most everything here 'sin azúcar' is also labelled 'dietetico'. This took a while for us to get used to. To buy yogurt without sugar added, we've had to get used to buying the dietetico product, which does not mean it is low fat. It simply means there is no added sugar.
