Mamacita

I thought that in the DR this was a name you would call your girlfriend or someone who you "would like to know better".

Literally it means little mama.

Someone told me it was a term of affection for your mother.

Who is right?

Could be either.
As in English, a man might refer to his wife or mother, as mama.

By "would like to know better" I did not mean in the gentleman sort of way. I understood that mamacitia was a derogatory term that men would call a woman in the street, in a situation where one would hear whistles and catcalls.

I also heard that it was derogatory. A while back on tv I remember hearing that term often, and I remember specifically it being used on one episode of "I Love Lucy" so when some one told me that it was derogatory, I was kind of surprised and then again I wasn't.

I don't think is derogatory, if I'm called that in the street, its a compliment, it means they think you look.....hmmm...let's see....they think you look very nice......

I used to have a worker that would always turn down the window and say "mamacita" and then give a very audible hissssss. Saw him do it about 50-60 times during the time he worked for me and never saw that it was very effective.
Guess it was that snake-like hiss that turned them off. (if fact running away. LOL)

It depends who you're saying it to, and how you're saying it.
Take the word, sweetbuns.
You might insult a woman calling her that, particularly if you do not know her, yet it could be a term of endearment for your girlfriend.

In my book "mamacita" is reserved only for your wife or gf, but only if you've been intimate with her. If you're courting a young lady, and want to eventually get La...er..you know what I mean, don't call her that. she'll be offended and won't give you any.

The term can sometimes be derogatory depending on circumstances. It is often used by uncouth people. And never, ever call your mother such unless you're like seven years old or afflicted by an Oedipus complex.
