Default "defeats the purpose"

What are a couple of good "criollo" and correct translations of the "defeats the purpose"?

I have been using "acaba con el proposito" because I thought I had used it before but am not sure.

thanks

Larousse says for: that rather defeats the object of the exercise(which essentially means the same as defeats the purpose)

It all depends on the circumstances and class level of the persons involved in the talk...

I am looking for maybe something a little more formal to be used in maybe a business discussion.

thanks

In that case "Aborta la idea original" is the fit...
