Default What is a "quintal"?

Came across this in the DR1 news and had never heard of a quintal.

when the government purchased 43,000 quintals of onions, but the sector lost 250,000 quintals because of a market surplus

Very old Spanish measurement. Weight, not volume. Sign is "qq" and is often talked about at the same time as a "fanega" which is 100kgs or 220 lbs.

Just part of the system in agriculture.
