Fui (from Ser or Ir)

In a song Kiko Rodriquez - Flor dormida

there is this phrase:
Por que encontró un cuidador que la regara
Le fui poniendo un poquito de amor
La fui abrigando en mi alma

I sometimes have problem with "fui" like here.
I think it's the preterit of SER
Am I wrong!

I beleive its the same for ir and ser preterite tense, but probably ser in this case

I know that FUI is the same in the preterit (Ser or Ir) that's what is confusing sometimes.

Because I found someone to take care of it
I went about putting out a little love
I was harboring it in my soul


THis is a play on the word.

Le fui = I went
La fui = I was.....

At least that is how it seems to make sense to me...

That is exactly the reason why I posted this thread.
It can be confusing sometimes choosing the verb source between the Ser and The ir.

In your example both of them are used ( I went) and (I was)

I usually don't have problems with it but here in this song when I read those lyrics I was a bit confused.

here is the correct answer:

"I saw your thread in the Spanish forum. Here is the right answer.

I have a key example for you something to guide you when deciphering:

1/ ir + gerund= voy haciendo, voy diciendo, voy comentando

- you can change these examples to the past tense to compare to your examples in the thread- fui haciendo, fui diciendo etc.

2/ ser + gerund does not exist in Spanish.

Just change the sentence back to the present tense to make it a bit easier and that may help you see why it cannot be ser: soy poniendo and soy abrigando could never be used or said in Spanish. That's how you know 'ser' is not possible.

Hope this makes sense. Both examples of fui come from 'ir'."
