Here is the best advise you're going to get. If you're renting a car, hire a taxi then follow him to your hotel, otherwise you may never find it. The DR ain't the USA!

but that doesn't mean it's impossible to find a place with good directions. I will agree to a point in that if you do lose your way, flagging down a motoconchista (not a taxi for heaven's sake) to lead you to your destination, can save a lot of time and aggravation. Been there, done that.

Okay, pay attention.

from the airport go straight into Santiago. Straight. You will bear to the right as you approach the end of the Avenida Monumental. You bear to the right. You are now on Las Carreras. You DO NOT go around the traffic circle!!

Okay, you are now on Batalla de las Carreras, a major 6 lane avenue that flows in both directions. You go straight. There are no turns allowed to the left (but you will not be turning left!!) Let's see from the time you pass by the Hotel and the casino, you will go through 1,2,3,4,5 lights. Now you have to deal with Santiago's new traffic patterns. Just past that Fifth light (San Luis) you will see a traffic indication on your right hand side that shows you how to go right-and then right to get on San Luis Street. You cross Las Carreras and take your first right..That is Salvador Cucurrulo Street. Go down this street a couple of blocks and on your right you will see a sign for HOTEL COLONIAL. The parking lot is just before the hotel, so watch for the opening.

BTW, we don't really like newbies driving in the DR, so I do hope you know what you are doing. If you have never driven here, you would be much better served hiring a taxi for your stay. About the same price and you leave the driving to the other guy!! Trust me on this.
You do know, for example, that if you are involved in an accident of any kind you have to go to the Police and waste a day? If there is anyone with so much as a scratch, you go to jail until it is straightened out?

If not, send an email to Rocío Valerio at palomalinda0890@hotmail.com and ask what it would cost you to hire a taxi for your stay (or for you running around)...

I really don't want to drive either BUT we plan to be all over the place when we go to DR so it would be hard to have a taxi. the plan for us it to
1. stay in sti sat
2. go to damajagua on sun
3. go to jarabacoa and then to la capital
4. go to punta cana and stay there until friday
5 on friday we want to pass by altos de chavon
6 stay in la capital for two days.

see it would be almost impossible to get a taxi to follow us around. i mean it would cost sooooo much

WRONG!
You are just too used to driving around.
Talk to Rocío and see what Saturday, Sunday and part of Monday would cost.
When you come back from Jarabacoa, you can take a bus to Santo Domingo and Taxi from there to your hotel. There are instruction on this board on how to get to Punta Cana by top of the line bus service.

I'll admit that you want to do a lot in just a few days. But think of the possible consequences...when it is all doable with good buses and taxis....and a whole lot cheaper, in fact!!

Someone once told me it was 1 1/2 hours from Santiago to the north coast, it took me two days
