Question Night Driving: SDQ to Bayahibe

We are arriving at SDQ at around 8 p.m. (First time in DR but crazy driver) Any advice or suggestion about getting a rental car and driving that night all the way to Bayahibe? Anything to watch out for or keep in mind?

Last year I drove that route last year but during the day light hours. I would not reccomend it for a first time driver. I got a flat tire and had to change it in the hot sun. The roads are not the best at some locations and the lighting not the best at certain locations. If you make the trip do it during the day.

I have driven this road frequently, but will not do it in the night time anymore. Once you are off the main highway after San Pedro de Macoris, the road is quite bad with a lot of potholes big enough to cause blowouts. You only have one spare tyre.......

If you do choose to drive during the day, I would suggest getting a early start. From the turnoff at San Pedro de Macoris traffic can get pretty heavy quickly. I live near the Malecon Center and I can make it to Bayahibe in 2 hours if I leave at 7AM. If I leave at 9AM, it usually takes 3.

If there are no alternatives, it is a fairly easy drive. We did it last week.
From the airport you go to the right and just follow your nose. The worst part is the first part through Boca Chica which is unlit. Go carefully. The route is reasonably well marked.

I would, however, urge you to see about hiring a car and driver, since the costs are about the same. The road from San Pedro to La Romana in two lanes only and not the safest in the country. In the daytime it is easy, but at night it can get really hairy.

think about a car and driver.
