Punta Cana to Puerto Plata, you are looking at 8-9 hours factoring in many variables!
Puerto Plata to Santo Domingo is approx. 4 hours.

I guess that is something only the driver can determine...traffic is unpredictable but road conditions may not be what you are udes to which is another challenge you will face.

If this is your first time driving in the DR, you may consider taking the bus.

IMHO, there couldn't be a worse time to leave than 4 AM.
That would put you in Santo Domingo at the peak of morning rush hour, costing you an extra hour and many gray hairs.

plus the fact that it will be dark and driving that road in the dark is quite dangerous....better to leave around 7-730 and miss the morning rush in santo domingo

We made that same drive on a Sunday. I think that is the best day to travel through the big city.

From Punta Cana, you have to pass through other cities, including Santo Domingo, before you get to Puerto Plata.

So, you might be leaving for Puerto Plata, but you WILL have to deal with Santo Domingo traffic before arriving at your final destination.

Check with the other more knowledgable DR1 folks but I thought, could be wrong, that rush hour in the big city is like 7AM to 9AM Monday through Friday. I would pad that with an hour on each end and make sure I miss it by that much. It is a nice drive, once outside the big city you can relax (a little) and enjoy.
