Drive east through Caberete all the way to Nagua,Then travel east toward Samana and you will run into the new Highway about 10-15 mins past Nagua then take the new highway to the end make a left and your right outside the airport almost. About a 3.5 hours - 4 hours depending on how you drive. I do it every month it is a very nice ride.

We just went from Cabarete to SD through this new road this week. It's indeed a very nice drive but not one I'll do at night. You travel for over an hour in a road with no exits, no rest stops, no gas stations, absolutely nothing but three toll booths. It took us 3 hours from Cabarete till the end of the new highway (close to the entrance of Las Americas). Considering the cost of gasoline, tolls, and parking, if you're going directly to the airport, I'd take the bus and a cab.

Haven't tried that
I have never driven the new highway (normally I have taken hwy 1 and then go through Moca and the mountains, takes me about the same to get to Santo Domingo, but I drive fast), I would like to try it one day, where would you catch it coming from la capital, and what would the sign say to get on the right highway??
I imagine you would drive past the exit for the airport, as if you were heading to Boca Chica, is that correct?,..... and how far past the airport should you start looking for signs, I am sure I have driven past it before because I have driven to Boca from the capital often enough times, but I guess because I wasn't looking for it, I didn't notice it.

The exit for the new highway coming from the capital is BEFORE the toll plaza. The exit is on the left and clearly marked. If you miss the exit go through the toll plaza, make a U-turn, go through the toll plaza again and make the very first right to get onto the service road of the autopista.

The new road is great if your going to the airport or further east to Juan Dolio or La Romana. Its a great road if you like to drive fast, A true black top highway where you can really move with very little traffic.

I am wondering.
Considering all the potholes on the road to Nagua, and the general condition of the road and traffic, is it really worth it>?
I think it takes about 1:30 to Santiago
Another 1:45 to Santo Domingo
and another 1:00 to the airport (On your right as you leave the toll booth.)
That is 4:15 + RD$30 in tolls, mostly on 4 lane highways, with rest stops, gas stations, people, conveniences on hand...
thanks, I think, if I was in Sosúa, I'd go the "old" way...
If I lived in Cabarete, I'd take the road over past Jamao to Moca and the Duarte Hwy.
In Cabrera, or Rio San Juan, I'd probably go the new way and bite the toll-bullet...$20 US plus, at least...

HB I like going both ways but for going directly to SDQ I find it much more relaxing and enjoyable drive to just head east then take the new hwy directly into the airport with only 2-4 traffic lights in Nagua to slow you down. The only drawback I have going the new way is the damm potholes between Gaspar Hernandez and Rio Sanjuan, otherwise I find it a great way to relax and unwind before getting on my plane to go home, I also love the views in the national park.
